Prison Projects

Kisii Prison is home to around 1,600 inmates — approximately 1,400 men and 160 women, along with 16 children who live there with their mothers. In Kenya, if a woman is imprisoned and her child is under the age of four, that child remains with her inside the facility.

The prison operates across two sites and, like many correctional centres in the region, faces challenges in providing for the basic needs of its residents.

Open Road Prophets first became involved through our dear friend, Reverend John Ochieng An'gawa, the Prison Chaplain for Kisii. After his invitation to visit the facility, we quickly recognised the deep need and the opportunity to offer practical help and compassion.

Since then, we have worked closely with the chaplaincy, prison staff, and the inmates themselves on a number of vital projects.

These have included providing period products for the women's wing and nappies for the children, ensuring that essential dignity and care are available where resources are scarce.

We have also undertaken building projects such as constructing shelters for gatherings, retiling key areas, and creating a new, clean water access point.

One of our most memorable contributions has been providing Christmas dinner for the entire prison community — a moment of shared joy and hope.

Our visits continue regularly, bringing encouragement and spiritual support to both staff and inmates.

The prison governor, guards, and all the Kisii team have been incredible partners in this mission.

Together, we strive to make daily life a little brighter and to help prepare prisoners for a hopeful return to life beyond the walls.
