Solar Water Installation

Open Road Prophets recently visited a community near Rongo where a local school and the wider surrounding population had long struggled with reliable access to fresh water. 

For many years, a well had been sunk that could provide enough water for the school, the community's 500 families, and all their livestock. 

The well had been in place for over ten years, but despite its potential, the community was unable to afford the electricity required to pump the water to where it was needed. As a result, access was limited, and families often faced hardship and long journeys just to collect the water necessary for daily life. 

Helping those in need

Through our community projects programme, Open Road Prophets was able to intervene by installing a solar water pump. This sustainable solution now allows water to be pumped freely and efficiently without reliance on costly electricity. 

The installation of the solar pump has transformed life for the community — every household, the school, and all livestock now have consistent access to clean, safe water. 

This year, the impact of the project has been particularly evident during an unusually harsh dry spell. Neighbouring communities, who previously faced water shortages, were able to travel to take advantage of the free-flowing, clean water.

It has not only alleviated immediate suffering but also strengthened community bonds, as people shared access to this vital resource. 

The solar pump has also addressed a long-standing health concern: waterborne disease. Previously, families had relied on unsafe sources, which frequently led to illness. With the reliable supply of clear, safe water, incidences of waterborne disease have dramatically decreased, improving the overall health and wellbeing of the community. 

This project demonstrates the lasting difference that practical, well-considered interventions can make. By combining technology, sustainability, and community support, Open Road Prophets has helped provide a resource that is essential for life, education, and livelihoods.
