Boda Boda Projects
The term *Boda Boda* comes from the phrase "border to border," originally describing the small motorbikes used to ferry people and goods across the borders of East Africa.
Today, the Boda Boda community forms the backbone of transportation in Kenya.
Predominantly made up of young men, these riders play an essential role in daily life — delivering everything from fridges and sofas to livestock, helping families move house, taking people to the market, and collecting children from school. In many communities, if you need to get somewhere or move something, you call a Boda Boda.
Despite their importance, the Boda Boda riders have often felt isolated and undervalued in Kenyan society. Many face challenges such as unsafe roads, limited income, and poorly maintained motorbikes.
It's common to see bikes lacking lights, mirrors, or functioning brakes — conditions that contribute to the tragic number of accidents and fatalities that occur daily.
In response, Open Road Prophets launched a programme in 2024 to support and empower this community. Since then, we have serviced over 150 bikes, working alongside our local team to build strong relationships and trust. Our initiative provides free servicing, essential replacement parts, and training on bike maintenance and safety.
We are now proud to be launching two exciting new projects — *Mechanic on a Mission* and *On Your Bike* — to expand this work further. Through these programmes, we aim to equip riders with skills, resources, and dignity, helping them not only stay safe on the road but also feel seen, valued, and connected as a vital part of Kenya's future.
